A new Netflix rom-com has been slammed as 'the worst movie of the year' after its unconventional ending left viewers scratching their heads.

Mother of the Bride was released on the streaming giant on May 9, and features an all-star ensemble cast, including Brooke Shields, Miranda Cosgrove, Chad Michael Murray and Benjamin Bratt.

Also starring in the film are Rachael Harris (Suits), Michael McDonald (MADtv), Wilson Cruz (My So-Called Life), Tasneem Roc (The Bureau of Magical Things), and Dalip Sondhi (Frayed).

The movie, executive produced by Shields and directed by Mean Girls and Freaky Friday director Mark Waters was shot on location in Thailand for six weeks.

Brooke Shields, 58, stars as Lana, the jittery helicopter mother to her calm daughter, Emma, played by former Nickelodeon star Miranda Cosgrove, 30.

Shields' character Lana also has to deal with seeing her college ex, Will, played by Benjamin Bratt, 60, who is best known for appearing on Law & Order.

Former One Tree Hill star Chad Michael Murray, 42, appears as Lucas, a romantic rival vying for Lana's affection.

However, the drama around the hasty nuptials is further complicated and ends on a rather unusual note when Lana discovers her future son-in-law is the offspring of the man who broke her heart decades ago (Bratt).

After a row at their children's wedding, Will pops the question to Lana and they become engaged - meaning the newlyweds will inevitably become step-siblings too.

The ending did not sit well with a number of viewers, who took to X to share their thoughts, with one person writing: 'Did nobody think it was weird to end the movie with the bride and groom becoming step siblings?'

Another viewer fumed: 'The worst movie I've seen so far this year is Mother of the Bride. How can the bride's mum and the groom's dad get engaged on the children's wedding day.'

They added: 'Doesn't that make the married children - step siblings. Who wrote this plot?

A third said: 'Mother of the Bride was all types of weird. So 2 ex lovers' kids get married and then those ex lovers decided to give it another try, hit a bump, and turn around and got engaged in the end, like that won't make their kids step-siblings.'

Another bewildered viewer fumed: 'Watching the movie Mother of the Bride and I'm trying to figure out if the plot is incest or not.'

Finally, one disappointed viewer wrote: 'Mother of the Bride is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm so embarrassed to have watched it. I swear a 12 year old wrote it.'

It comes after Netflix fans slammed a 2024 movie starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson as the 'dumbest' they have ever seen, after it was given a new lease of life by being uploaded to the streaming platform.

The Sony superhero film, Madame Web, was roasted by critics and fans, who branded it an 'embarrassing mess' and the 'worst comic book movie ever' when it hit cinemas back in February.
